Bunch of Grapes Tavern opens.

1658

[1712] Formerly the Castle Tavern, it is operated by Francis Holmes and located near today’s 53 State Street. The building burns down in the Great Fire of 1711 and is rebuilt on the same site. Francis Holmes is the first proprietor. The tavern moves to a nearby location in 1753, becomes known as “Mr. Ingersol’s” after proprietor Col. Joseph Ingersol from 1764 to 1772, and then renamed for its new proprietor, Capt. John Marston in 1775. The building is torn down in 1798 to make way for construction of the New England Bank.
